Created my dancer and choreographer, Alberto “Beto” Perez from Miami and collaborating with two entrepreneurs Alberto Perlman and Alberto Aghion, they created a huge dance fitness craze. A variety of DVDs are available via websites and infomercials. DVDs in the millions have been sold in more than 30 countries.

Today, there are more than 25,000 official Zumba fitness instructors who conduct classes all over the world and Zumba fitness has been featured in newspapers, magazines, TV shows, and many more media outlets.

According to the Zumba fitness creator, Alberto Perez, answering the often asked question; What is Zumba.

The dance fitness program uses the principles of resistance training and fitness interval training to increase caloric output and all-body toning.

The idea behind combining easy dance steps in a fitness program is to help those who have a negative association with exercise and fitness re-framing their attitude about fitness and exercise.

Zumba has been built on a foundation of latin music and dance. The dance moves are based on a variety of latin styles inclinding meringue, pop, reggaeton, cumbia, mambo, slasa, salsaton, flamenco, rumba, and calypso. Both slow and fast rhythms are involved so Zumba enthusiasts receive a variety to beat the boredom and increase agility and muscular involvement.

Alberto “Beto” Perez is a well-known celebrity fitness trainer who took advantage and incorporated Latin dance in a fitness program. The program originated in his native Colombia in South America during the 1990s.

What is Zumba? – Creation Through Passion

During one of his days instructing his students, he forgot to bring his usual aerobic tapes and so had to use one of his tapes found in his car. Most of the music was salsa and meringue. He discovered how fun and effective it seemed to be for his students and therefore improved the program, evolving into the current Zumba fitness. It became extremely popular in the fitness club where he instructed.

Alberto Perlman and Alberto Aghion saw the potential of the program and approached Beto to bring Zumba into America and the global scene. The company was primarily based on the Zumba fitness principles and philosophy, so they began offering Zumba classes worldwide.

The Zumba program caught on like wildfire and it is making a huge difference in the lives of many who would not have been turned onto fitness at all if it weren’t for the existence of Zumba fitness.

As a NYC personal trainer, I support Zumba fitness. I support any fitness program that will turn-on a Curvy Goddess to fitness.

Zumba is an extremely popular because of the dance foundation of the fitness program making exercise fun.

  1. As a Zumba instructor I can tell you that in my experience I have way more larger girls attend Zumba classes than any other fitness class I’ve taught over the years. It almost seems like the stigma attached to other fitness classes doesn’t apply to Zumba and they feel more comfortable coming to a dance based class than they do a traditional aerobics class.

    The awesome thing is with the right instructor the class can be adjusted to accommodate all fitness levels so everyone is getting the workout appropriate and effective for them. It’s truly one of my favourite things about Zumba! I actually had a new participant last night who would be considered morbidly obese and she totally rocked it right along with the super fit girls!

    Zumba is a perfect company for all those ignorants aouthere. I got certified a year ago, and I am so dissapointed regarding the way they are doing this.
    1)Everyone can be a Zumba Fitness Instructor….even your greatgrandmother who perhaps can’t even move.
    2) You can be obese and continuing being obese after 3 years of teaching Zumba “Fitless” and still people will follow you, because everyone wants to look like you!!!!! Ignorants!!!!
    3) Because of the prior comment, everyone on each town or city is now a “Zumba Intructor”, and even if you dont have any &$#* idea how to move and what the “latin” moves mean, and instead you just play hip-hop and pop, you are teaching it.
    4) Dont you see ignorants that they are just making money, but they dont give a crap about helping the good instructors????? Now there are Zumba classes on each corner of everywhere, and every instructor is doing a totally different stuff???? Ignorants!!! Just supporting this crappy company. I hope they get the boomerang soon.
    5) Who lives out of Zumba “job”? Not even gym or studio owners who have to lower the fees per class, because the “fatty” oldie and clowny instructor around the corner is charging $1 dollar per class. OMG!!!!!!!!!
    6) Who is always in the same DVD’s and traveling and getting the money??? Just Alberto, Beto, Gina and the “Wig” Queen Tanya.


    • I’m very sorry Veronica that you are frustrated and disappointed with your experience as a Zumba instructor. As a NYC personal trainer and being certified with NASM and being certified in a variety of specialties I understand that it is still a b*tch to market myself and express to prospective clients who I am, what I do, and how I can make a difference in their lives.

      The work is never-ending but if you are passionate about what you do the yucky stuff like getting out there and marketing yourself is so worth it!

      I keep blinders on so as to not get distracted by what other people are doing. The blinders help me focus forward on my vision.

  3. I just started doing Zumba.. I love it..I do it on our WII.. In the privacy of our home..I am not coordinated enough to go out in to the public eye to do ANY dance moves…I wanted to get toned up and the workouts are amazing.. Thank you for introducing us to the Zumba…

  4. I found this article very late but wanted to put my two cents in!

    I am a plus size female (size 14/16) and a certified zumba instructor working in Southern California. I feel the trademarked Zumba brand promotes only very thin, super-fit people. Most of their clothing is not plus-friendly. However they are in the fitness business and want to make money; so I understand why they market the way they do. I wouldn’t mind seeing some curvier girls on their site, though.

    While I’m not thin I AM extremely fit. I dance 4-5 days per week and am a damn good instructor as well! 🙂 I try to stick to the formula of at least 70% latin but add in pop, cabaret, even country tunes for variety. Zumba helped me to drop nearly 60 pounds and is an awesome, fun way to work out! Don’t let the stereotypes on their website fool you……I have people from age 15 all the way to age 72 in my classes and they come in all shapes, sizes, and fitness levels. Give it a try!

  6. Ive stumbled across this site and Ive read your comments. I find Veronica Macias highly offensive. Ive been doing Zumba for 11 months my instructor is NOT Barbie but she can run circles around Anyone in the class. She is a Latin girl and follows all the rules according to the organization. I have been very motivated by her class and have lost 50lbs with the help of her class. A good Fitness instructor motives the student to not only do the workout but want to come back. Based on the complaints you state above I would not want to take your class. The whole point of your profession is to help people stay fit and healthy. Doctors are doctors to help the sick, School bus drivers like to drive and like children etc. Based on your comment you should change careers. NOT everyone is Barbie in this world and if you feel Everyone should be you are a mean person that sees the world with blinders on. So while you live in your perfect bubble I will continue to truly care about human beings.

  9. Zumba works because it is fun – therefore it is easy to keep doing the workout without getting board. I like the way it is always challenging as you can push yourself as much or as little as you are fit enough to do..
